  • Weather and Safety (WSL) Guidance

    AFGE encourages ALL employees to request Weather and Safety leave in the Following has occurred. If you were denied Weather and Safety Leave Please contact the union IMMEDIATELY. 

    WEATHER AND SAFETY LEAVE (WSL) - DISCRETIONARY LEAVE 1. VHA’s Executive in Charge (EIC) issued updated guidance for approving WSL for employees affected by COVID-19 on May 13, 2020. This rescinds earlier policies dated February 2, 2020 and March 17, 2020. The use of discretionary WSL is not retro-active prior to effective date of EIC memo dated May 13, 2020.

    2. WSL is a leave flexibility that may be granted to employees who cannot come to work and are not eligible to telework or not able to safely telework at alternate worksite.

    3. Effective May 13, 2020, WSL may be approved when:

    a. Employee is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and is unable to work at normal workplace or telework. Previously, a symptomatic employee could not use WSL and was required to use SL, AL or LWOP.

    b. Employee has exhausted 80 hours of expanded sick leave under FFCRA (see above).

    c. Employee advised by a health care provider to self-quarantine for COVID-19 related reasons and is unable to work at normal workplace or telework.

    d. Other situations where it is determined the employee is unable to safely travel to or perform work at the facility or telework.
